Complete 2009 Predictions List

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Christoph Waltz Christopher Plummer Woody Harrelson Stanley Tucci Matt Damon
Inglourious Basterds The Last Station The Messenger The Lovely Bones Invictus

Analysis:  Christoph Waltz gave what may be the most iconic performance of the year, as Col. Hans "The Jew Hunter" Landa.  The opening scene at the French milk farmers house wrapped up the Oscar in my mind.  Long time veteran actors Stanley Tucci and Christopher Plummer receive their first nominations, while Woody Harrelson earns his second in the heavily acclaimed The Messenger.  Matt Damon gets the final spot possibly due to his two great performances this year (the other in The Informant!).  Waltz has this all but locked up, but be weary of long time overdue actor Christopher Plummer.  Nah... Waltz is a Bingo!

Will Win - Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds

Should Win - Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds

Could Win - Christopher Plummer, The Last Station

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Mo'Nique Maggie Gyllenhaal Anna Kendrick Vera Farmiga Penelope Cruz
Precious: Based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire Crazy Heart Up in the Air Up in the Air Nine

Analysis:  Many are wondering if Mo'Nique has hurt her chances at Oscar gold by her season long divaesque attitude.  The answer: no.  Her awards season sweep will continue, and this should be hers by a landslide.  Kendrick is really the only other actress who gained any award wins, so if you disagree with me about Mo'Nique's behavior being a problem and feel like calling for an upset, she might be your best bet.  However, I think Up in the Air has lost a lot of steam, so if you are feeling really silly, go with Maggie Gyllenhaal for Crazy Heart.  This should be a no branier though.

Will Win - Mo'Nique, Precious

Should Win - Mo'Nique, Precious

Could Win - Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crazy Heart
