Top Ten Greatest Movie Scores of the Decade

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: Greatest of the Decade Series

   1

Now that the heat of the Oscar nominations has cooled down a little, we can get back to my Best of the 00’s series.  The Scores (or theme music) this decade were top heavy if you ask me.  I don’t feel there was a lot of depth in this category, but what ended up high on my list I feel very happy about.  There are some all time great Scores here, with or without the depth.  I have included a few of the themes from the Scores that I feel extra passionate about.

Going into this list I pretty much knew what my number one would be.  I still feel confident with my choice, but any of my top 3 really could be mixed around in any order.

If you have missed any of my prior Top 10 lists of the decade, feel free to check out my Characters, Male Performances, Female Performances, Quotes  and Songs pages.

And as always, feel free to leave comments on your thoughts about my choices as well as your own top ten film scores of the decade!

   UP IN THE AIR

Congratulations to Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner and especially Walter Kim (the author).  The Scripter is the one award that recognizes both the screenwriters of adapted screenplays AND the original author of the source material from which it was taken.

Up in the Air is also the favorite to take the WGA in a couple of weeks as well as the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

On Video for 2/2/10 and In Theatres for 2/5/10

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: DVD/Blu-Ray Release, In Theatres

Sorry about missing the “On Video” post for this week, but the Oscar nomination announcement and site updates kind of took over that day!

So let’s kill two birds with one stone!

On video this week are Zombieland, Love Happens, Amelia, and The House of the DevilZombieland looks like it could be a fun twist on the zombie flick genre.  Whatever you do, stay away from Amelia!

In theatres this week are Dear John (having to type that on my site just made me puke), From Paris With Love, Frozen and I Love You Phillip Morris (limited).  If you like sappy-over-the-top-cookie-cutter chick flicks then… rent Steel Magnolias for God’s sake!!  Dear John just looks ridiculous.  If you want a shoot-’em-up action flick then From Paris… might be something you enjoy.  However, I would save my money for next week when Wolfman comes out!!

Ten Up, Ten Down

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: Oscar Watch

I have now had some time to stew over the nominations.  Overall, I am satisfied with their choices.  However, no list is completely perfect to everyone.  So I have put together a list of 10 nominations I disagree with, and 10 that I was pleasantly surprised/happy about (not counting any of the no brainers such as Inglourious Basterds for Best Picture or Christoph Waltz for Supporting Actor).

Let’s start with what I feel they got right after the jump:

Cameron Outdoes Himself

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: Uncategorized

   Per 20th Century Fox:

James Cameron’s Avatar passed up the filmmaker’s own Titanic at the domestic box office on Tuesday to claim that crown as well.  Avatar reached $601,141,551 after 47 days to pass up the $600,788,188 that Titanic earned its entire run.

Internationally, Avatar had already passed up Titanic’s $1,242,413,080, and now stands at $1,446,989,293.

Worldwide, Avatar has brought in $2,048,130,844 so far, while Titanic earned $1,843,201,268 total.

My Oscar Nomination Report Card

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: Opinion, Oscar Watch

In my first year of predicting the entire field of nominations, I did pretty darn good (if I don’t say so myself).  I have listed how I did indivisually in the major categories, as well as overall.

Best Picture: 8 for 10
Best Director: 5 for 5
Best Lead Actor: 5 for 5
Best Lead Actress: 5 for 5
Best Supporting Actor: 5 for 5
Best Supporting Actress: 3 for 5
Best Original Screenplay: 4 for 5
Best Adapted Screenplay: 4 for 5
Best Animated Feature: 4 for 5
Best Documentary Feature: 3 for 5
Best Foreign Film: 5 for 5

So I went 51 for 60 on my actual guesses (85%), and 54 for 60 if you include alternates (90%).  Not bad!

On the technical side of the awards it got a little more tricky, as I correctly guessed 32 out of the 51 nominees (63%), which is not that bad for the techs.

How did you do?

The 82nd Academy Award Nominees

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Oscar Watch

  1

It’s been a long Oscar season.  A lot of great movies.  A lot of great debates as to who should be nominated.  Now we have our answers, and the questions of who will win begin to take shape!

I placed how I did with predicting each category next to the nominees.  Supporting Actress was the hardest to predict as I suspected.  A little disappointed with both Laurent and Kruger missing out, as well as Moore.  But thrilled about Maggie!

The Hurt Locker and Avatar lead with 9 nominees each, and Inglourious Basterds is right behind with 8.

Best Picture  – 8/10
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air

Razzie Nominations Announced!

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: Precursor Awards

The Razzies honor the worst movies and actors in film for the year.  They are the anti-Oscar and a lot of fun.  The list of nominees is always worth a laugh or two.  This years list includes a few categories honoring the worst of the decade as well!  Fun stuff.  The winners (or losers?) are announced March 6th.

Anyone else find it humorous that Sandra Bullock just might win the Oscar AND the Razzie in the same year!??!

My Final Oscar Nomination Predictions!

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Oscar Watch

Ok!  Here we go… the Oscar season is about to hit its peak as the nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards are announced Tuesday morning.  We will soon have our answers as to who makes the cut, and the discussions for who will win should begin to heat up!  As always, you can check the Oscar Prediction section at the top of the site for each category, and find trailers, posters and more in depth analysis as to who will win on Oscar night.

I will be listing my predictions in this post as a way of keeping record (the Oscar Prediction section will be replaced with the actual nominees once they are announced).  Along with my final predictions, I will list one alternate (three in the Best Picture category) and one movie/person that I think should have received more consideration this season.  Each list will be ranked from most likely to receive a nomination to least likely, just as it is in the Oscar Prediction section above.

   And the predicted nominees are…

   Best Picture

   The Hurt Locker
   Avatar
   Inglourious Basterds
   Up in the Air
   Precious
   An Education
   Up
   District 9
   Invictus
   Star Trek

Alternates: A Serious Man, The Messenger, The Blind Side
Should have received more attention: (500) Days of Summer

Bigelow Takes DGA

Author: Mark Johnson //  Category: Best Director, Best Picture, Precursor Awards

Kathryn Bigelow wins the Directors Guild Award for her film The Hurt Locker, becoming the first female to do so in the 62 year history of the presentation.  In doing so, Bigelow also becomes an extreme favorite to become the first female to take home the Oscar for Best Director on March 7th.  In the previous 61 years of the DGA, the winner has gone on to win the Best Director Oscar 55 times.  That’s 90% of the time!  The film that the winning director helmed went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture 48 times, which is over 78% of the time.  After winning the PGA, the DGA, most of the Critics awards including The Critics Choice, The LA Critics, The New York Critics and The National Society of Film Critics, one would be foolish to bet against Kathryn Bigelow or The Hurt Locker for Best Director and Best Picture come Oscar Night.

Here is a complete lis of the DGA winners:

Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
TV Movie: Taking Chance
Television Series: Mad Men
Comedy Series: Modern Family
Documentary: The Cove
Musical/Variety: Obama Inauguration
Reality TV:  Build it Bigger
